Hi, I've played with fibre optic bare cable for irish crochet. Most is end-emitting but some transmission of light along the length occurs via microbending. Modern f/o cable is plastic, not glass, so no breaking problems. I bought a range of diff diameters from 1mm to 0.25mm thick. Hasn't worked properly as yet with irish crochet due to too much microbending & the light loses coherence (ie all light lost) after a short distance. If you're on Ravelry I've put the project (an irish rose) & pics there (search for "lacegrrl" - that's me!). Will try using thread around a packing cord of f/o cable, I think this may work better. Bobbin lace should be ok, as winding & twisting will induce less microbending (you want some, so light is transmitted lengthwise, but not too much). Jen in Melbourne, Australia.
