I did a roaring trade in crochet "lace" dresses in the late 60s in my
off-work hours. Just about all my friends and acquaintances below the age of
about 28 wore them and I was the only one able to crochet. They had a
choice of long or short sleeves or sleeveless; they chose the stitch they
wanted the top in and the stitch, which looked like a bit like bobbin lace
feather fans, for the skirt and the colour. I could knock out a couple a
week. I think I charged about GBP3.00 a dress on top of materials. Two of
those a week added half again to my weekly earnings.
I also made a crochet winter wedding dress for DH's sister which was sort of
Irish crochet in that it was covered in raised Irish crochet roses. Both of
us bridesmaids wore the crochet dresses I'd previously been making to order.
Can't believe I wore dresses that short - or was that slim!
I also made a crochet skirt and jacket suit plus numerous tops.
