Dear Friends,
it was only yesterday that I learned of the death of Betty Ann Rice. I can only think that this sad event must have occurred while I was unsubscribed and in India.

So this afternoon, our time, I phoned her husband Clive in Virginia to express my condolences. What a wonderful gentle man he is! I have never met Betty or Clive in person, yet I was able to tell Clive what a profound effect Betty had had on my lace making career. He was so genuinely moved and grateful that I had called.

I shall always remember Betty for her encouragement and humour, but especially for the youthful spirit she emanated. Some 10 or perhaps even 15 years ago Betty sent me a rock crystal in the shape of a cross which came from the Black Bear Mountains near Roanoke where she lived, and I was able to hang it on a favourite bobbin. Every time I move that bobbin, which is just about every day, I think of Betty and am thankful.

Sadly
