What amazed me about the hurricane we had in 1987, when I lived in the middle of the countryside in Somerset, was that large beech trees which were blown over and hadn't been cleared by the spring started to sprout shoots from their exposed roots. They were determined not to die (if trees can be determined to do anything). Nature recovers itself fairly easily - pity people and their property can't do the same.

So glad that so many of you seem to have avoided major problems, but thoughts are with those of you who haven't been so lucky.
