What amazed me about the hurricane we had in 1987, when I lived in the
middle of the countryside in Somerset, was that large beech trees which were
blown over and hadn't been cleared by the spring started to sprout shoots
from their exposed roots. They were determined not to die (if trees can be
determined to do anything). Nature recovers itself fairly easily - pity
people and their property can't do the same.
So glad that so many of you seem to have avoided major problems, but
thoughts are with those of you who haven't been so lucky.
