I have heard stories indicating that the Vatican has a lot of good lace. These are very second hand. In fact, one was to the effect that Marian Powys, lace expert of the New York area, had been consulted or had catalogued, or something, the lace at the Vatican. It makes sense, of course, that there would be great lace treasures at the Vatican. A display I saw in Belgium included some correspondence about some lace made for a pope when he was still a Cardinal. It seemed as though it was a great delight for people to make lace for high placed clerics. I don't know that I think that just anybody could gain entrance to what I imagine in my dreams to be the magnificent lace vaults of the Vatican. But, maybe Sister Claire, or someone with connections could find out about this. I would be very interested to know about it. It would make a great article for the IOLI Bulletin. This isn't actually an answer to Karen's post, since I don't imagine that anyone would be allowed to see it without having a lot of credentialing and correspondence first. This might sound strange, but I loved the lace on the effigies in St. Peter's. (Pope John's effigy was wearing Cantu, so that won the show for me.)
