Yes, that is the sort of thing I was trying to do, but with needlelace.  There 
is one in Needle Lace Techniques and Inspiration by Jill NOrdfors Clark on page 
47 made by Nancy Evans, but there are no instructions.  I know there are 
instructions online for ones done with wire on eggshells, I just wanted to try 
with thread, and not on something I might crush.

This is an opportunity to mention The Lace Museum in Sunnyvale  California.  
Their newsletter came very recently, and it is now with Tess  (along with a big 
pile of new books for her to read), so I cannot quote  directly.  However, 
there 
were 3 glass tree ornaments pictured in the  newsletter, trimmed with different 
types of laces, and pins most  definitely could not have been used on glass.  
It 
is a tradition to  decorate their Christmas tree with these ornaments, and if 
you could see them,  Janice, I think you could figure out how to wrap
