Hello All! Thank you Lorelei for posting the link to crewel embroidery. The book Deerfield Embroidery by Margery Burnham Howe (pub. 1976) is a fascinating read & is easily borrowed. ISBN-13 9780684143774 or ISBN-10 0684143771 It was quite an operation: creating the designs, parceling out the work to local needleworkers & dyeing the wool (indigo vats!) while maintaining quality control. There are patterns in the back of the book or kits & patterns may be purchased from the Historic Deerfield Museum in Deerfield, MA. Usual disclaimers, satisfied customer etc. In other crewel news, it should be noted that Stan Hywet in Akron, OH is re-creating The Cromwell Counterpane http://www.stanhywet.org/images/company_assets/512F1C7F-0D64-4A5E-9D91-785DC064755F/5af6f_SH_MAGAZINE_CROMWELL.pdf using the remnants of Jacobean panels in its collection. It is a multi-year volunteer project & each stitcher is allowed to stitch her name in the selvedge. Gorgeous from a distance & eve! n better up close & personal!
