For several years now I've been a volunteer at a narrow gauge preserved railway in North Wales, and as I don't drive, getting there means a four and a half hour train journey. I frequently take my travel pillow to work on, and tend to sit at a table rather than in one of the airline style seats. This has led to some interesting exchanges, with families sitting with me, some coming to sit at the table and do some of whatever I'm working on. The (female) train conductors have taken an interest, as well.

I also organise an annual event at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, "Lace on the Train", where several of us get together and make lace on the trains during the day, giving passengers the chance to watch and have a go. This year we have brought the weekend forward to August 10 and 11 - the first weekend of The Lace Guild's Summer School which is being held nearby (and I believe they start later in the day on the Saturday, so anyone going has time to come and join us!).

In April (26-8) we will be having a Lace Weekend at the Queens' Hotel in Porthmadog - a chance to have a break from the chores and make lace for the weekend, and maybe teach a few of the locals who we are inviting to drop in. If anyone would like to join us, please contact me off list - the hotel does still have some rooms available. We will be using both of these events, the weekend and Lace on the Train, to raise some funds towards completing our locomotive Russell's heavy overhaul, which is now in its final stages but still requires a lot of money to be raised!
