When there are probably less than 50 regular contributors to Arachne, and we know that there are another 1,000 or so who are lurking, does that matter to you? Do we have a lot of knowledgeable people out there who are takers, instead of sharers? And do they even care to realize how frustrating that is for some of us to contemplate? In my lifetime I have experienced many people in school, and then in business, who just did not give and share. Very often the most knowledgeable sat at the back of the room, did not participate in meetings, never volunteered. If this describes you, it would greatly enhance our lace world if you would join those who share. It is not just the problem of Arachne participation. Last Fall I drove 4 hours one-way to attend a lace group meeting. Something done less than once a year, because it takes another 4 hours of driving to return home. I was welcomed, and they mentioned my Arachne posts. I looked at the experienced lacemakers facing me, and got bold enough to ask them to do more than read - to SHARE their valuable experience. My request was greeted with firmly clinched teeth. And, I might add - they have remained lurkers. Everyone! We all have something to bring to the table. We cannot attract younger lace people if we do not convey by our actions the message that we all do our share and we do care. What we share on Arachne and in our lace groups is much more exciting than playing solitaire. It builds wonderful friendships and memories. Hopefully, this memo has given some of our lurkers food for thought.. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center
