Hi arachnids The lacemakers songs or 'tells' had a distinct use in that they encouraged faster work. Sea shanties were used to keep the seamen working together when rowing and hauling ropes, the lacemakers would move their bobbins to the rhythm and it would keep their speed constant. I'm sure events in the past sparked songs, the same as they do now. I'm not so sure that the song writers did it with the intension if preserving historical facts. Before the age of the written word it was an important means of preserving thoughts. After the facts could be written down that means became somewhat redundant.
