Lace and longevity sometimes go hand-in-hand. Petronella runs circles
around others half her age, double difficult because she is well under 5 feet
tall. We walked back to the hotel after the OIDFA banquet in 2008 - well,
I walked, she ran. A native of The Netherlands, she immigrated to
Australia 60 years ago. Her life has revolved around community service, lace
and
embroidery. She made the embroidered clothing she wore to OIDFA. When she
walked into the hotel lobby or breakfast room, everyone knew her!

In 2008, Petronella was still traveling long distances, and teaching lace
classes. She mentioned teaching in Ireland, and perhaps there are Irish
lacemakers on Arachne who will remember her.

At an earlier OIDFA Congress, she showed me pictures of a lovely lace
depiction of a bell tower in Florida that she had made.

For more information and inspiration, do a search of Petronella Wensing,
Canberra Australia.

Liz, or others in/near Canberra, the next time you see Petronella, please
give her my congratulations and a big hug.

Over here in Australia, a lacemaker was awarded an Order of Australia in
the
Birthday Honours - Petronella Wensing who lives in Canberra. She has some
lace on (?)permanent show in the national museum.

I had the privilege of going to a 2 day workshop she gave here in Melbourne
about 5 years ago.... It was a most enjoyable weekend, and she is a great
teacher.
