For tatting you need a smooth, firmly twisted thread round. The six ply crochet threads are ideal - DMC Cordonnet, Special Dentelles, Coats crochet, Lizbeth etc. Generally the more plies the better it will be as more plies make for a rounder, less squashable thread. 2 ply cotton perle can be used but will be more difficult if you need to unpick anything!
