My immediate thoughts were the same as yours but when I re-read Palliser the punctuation was correct and I used the same punctuation, just that I used digits instead of writing the words in full. She left 65 'children and grandchildren' not 65 children plus grandchildren.
The exact words from Palliser are: "....leaving sixty-five children and grandchildren, thus...... I don't know how many chiden she had, but if it was say, eight, then each of them would have needed to produce seven or eight to get to the total of sixty five.
