Sometimes a patterns anticipates a curve, while lacing you think you need backstitches, to discover you soon need backstitches on the other side, so after all you didn't need a single backstitch at all. Instead of counting to get proper curved braids, I draw lines on a copy of the pattern. A zigzag line for plain cloth stitch, or just connect opposite dots with parallel lines for decorated braids.
