Good morning Spiders

As you all know, I have been looking into the possibility of Print On Demand
for my book Needlelace Designs & Techniques, largely prompted by the
outrageous prices being asked by second-hand booksellers, putting it way
beyond the reach of those coming new to needlelace. I've received three
emails just this last week from ladies hoping that I might have a copy to sell
but unfortunately I do not! I have received requests from the embroidery
world too.

The first thing I need to do is to get a quote from a Print On Demand company,
for what I consider to be an affordable price, but of course they will want to
know how many copies I require - 'how long is a piece of string'? I have
absolutely no idea what the demand might be but you will all appreciate that
the larger the print run the cheaper the sale price. However, I have no wish
to be left with a pile of books in my dining room that are surplus to
requirements, so would ask if you might be interested in a copy, to email me
privately so that I have some idea of how many copies to get a quote for. I
am not asking for a firm commitment but if you would be seriously interested,
an indication of intent. If you have friends belonging to lace/embroidery
groups perhaps you would be kind enough to forward this information on to
them,

Many of you will have bought some of the notelets of my 'Parasol For Iris'
which I had printed in 2007 and with help from family, friends and colleagues
who took them to their classes, I was able to send the sum of £1,512 to Breast
Cancer Research in memory of one of my students who was a victim of that
dreadful disease. The first 1,000 notelets sold in just 3 weeks so I had
another 2,000 printed, at a far better price than the first batch of 1,000 so
I have no wish to make the same mistake again! It is in the interest of
everyone that I try to get a reasonable quote, thus making the book available
at what I consider to be a reasonable price and also help stop the outrageous
profiteering that would appear to be going on for some out of print lace
titles.

I have no wish to enter into a lengthy discussion about the pros and cons or
cost of self publishing or Print on Demand, but simply an email as an
indication of intent.

I spent a day with Alex Stillwell at her home a few weeks ago and she has been
so generous with help and guidance as to how I might go about this and I now
realize that it will be a long and tedious process for me but if I can achieve
those two objectives, it will have been a worthwhile exercise.

Many thanks

Catherine
