Hi All, David's post about the beautiful hankie he saw prompts this note. My sister came to visit and showed me her handkerchief collection. She loves colored embroidered flowers but has quite a few others. Some Whitework and a couple that I should have looked at closer. She might have some real treasures.
Anyway, looking at the hankies made me get my copy of "Whitework Embroidered Lace Handkerchiefs" by Elizabeth Kurella. The caption by a photo of the handkerchief fabric says "Muslin fine enough to read through was the centuries-old measuring stick for fabric used in lacy embroideries." The book is lovely with lots of information. A number of the hankies have drawnwork and some have very fine needlelace in the spaces. One Point de Gaze initial is incredible. Amazing eye candy too <G>. Elizabeth does not pay me to write this, I'm just a very happy customer <G>. And I'm going to buy a copy of "Whitework" for my sister for Christmas. Jane in Vermont, USA with loads of yellow leaves outside the windows - it looks like a sunny day even when it's cloudy!
