Hello All! Whew--It's been a long two days with computer, email & phone
issues. Geez, it was almost like 1954 to be out of touch like that! Jean
Mary--I can't thank you enough for the delightful Christmas cheer!! Just wish
the rabbits were coming to play at Kravis Center (the local venue for stage
productions). I've already sent your link to other lacemakers to share the
joys of the season. My six pair demo lace plan got a boost with some patterns
from Antje. I've managed to make one with some DMC Cordonnet 30 that I found
at the needlepoint shop, then kicked it up a notch with some Kreinik #4 very
fine braid. The little pillow is only 5.5"x8" & not very heavy so it was more
fiddly than I expected. Another hand is needed to keep the pillow from sliding
across my work space! LOL In any event, the finished lace is calling me to
add a fine silk/satin ribbon. Plus I thought I would see if there is a way to
make an invisible finish with Martina's book at hand. Thank !
you Lyn for reminding me to use the spangles to tie down the bobbins. When I
went in search of a stitch holder at the knit shop, the owner had none to sell.
Instead she rummaged thru her bits & bobs & came up with a long fuschia pin &
said Merry Christmas! It looks great & matches my pearl head divider pins. In
addition to the mini-roller pillow, I'm plannning on a "try-it" pillow with the
snake pattern. My idea to use Oliver Twist thread hit a snag when I realized I
only had 13 colorful glass bobbins. I've posted a pic to Flickr & used the
very lovely IOLI 60th Anniversary bobbin for the other half of my 7th pair.
BTW--if anyone knows who made the glass bobbins, please contact me--it wouldn't
hurt to own a few extras. The needlepoint shop luckily had some perle 8 &
similar weight threads so now I'm good to go with snakes. Having never made
this pattern before, I'm a bit concerned about my first effort. The nose seems
too angular so I wondered if I should twist al!
l pairs before starting the cloth stitch? My instructions didn't incl
ude a finishing method & the only reference I found (elsewhere) was a Bruges
tie-off which resulted in a neat, but stumpy looking tail. Are there any snake
experts who will advise? Do I need to toss out bobbins? Try for an invisible
finish with Magic threads? Could an overhand knot be the simple answer?
Thanks to all who have helped me get off the dime!! BTW--heads up--this
weekend the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning will be open &
decorated in downtown Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Lace Group (PLG) will be
demonstrating in the Croghan-Schenley room. They always put up a small
Christmas tree covered with lace ornaments & a Nativity scene. I will miss the
fun--it's a very lovely event. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, on vacation & making a
bit of lace
