Another thought for those who think you have to have a teacher - the first lace, which we've all had passed on to us by various means, was made by someone who didn't have a lace teacher. Possibly a weaver by trade, but definitely self taught where the lace was concerned! Since that time, mistakes and "what if" experiments have led to the range of stitches we have now. Lace evolves, and it is often the self-taught thinking things through who come up with new ideas.

I'm sure I've told you, I once had one of my ladies bring her son (approx 12 at the time) with her to class. He wanted to have a go, but wanted to do it his way. We left him to a pillow and bobbins... about half an hour of trying different ways of twisting and crossing the threads, he asked us to show him how to do it properly. I don't know if he made much lace, I think he possibly did one of my patterns in class (it is going back about 20 years!) but that is possibly the way the first lace stitches were puzzled out.
