Adding to this you could use coloured card to denote various type of lace,
ie red, yellow, blue and green etc. I have done this and typed the name on
the front first.

I like the idea of spiral binding when it comes to
being able to open the book to work from it or to copy a pattern.
I also see
the problems with not being able to see what the book is. We use binding
systems at work, so I'm somewhat familiar with them. You don't always need
to use a clear plastic cover page. We use sheets that are a little heavier
than card stock that wear very well.
