I have also received similar messages and passed on to PayPal. Their advice is to never use any links in those messages to go to your account, but to go to the site using the site address. Recently, I have also been receiving messages purportedly from NatWest when I have never had accounts there!
A piece of advice I can share is this: I have an account and Debit (not Credit) card that I use only for online purchases. The account, at all times, has very little funds in it - never more than EURO 10. When I purchase anything, I transfer the amount I need to spend just before I process the payment through PayPal, or otherwise. I am happy enough to give the number even by eMail or over the phone so that a person can charge the card. All I ask is for coordination - I transfer the money, by computer or on my phone, and the seller charges the card straight away. I feel very secure doing this because anyone laying hands on this information will never find anything worth taking. This has worked well for me ever since we have had internet banking in Malta.
