Thank you, Lorelei.

Everyone, this website is highly recommended. Do other members recall
visiting Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof''s studio during the lace tour following the
OIDFA Congress in The Netherlands? It was lovely, situated in a shop
setting on a street of many shade trees in Apeldoorn. Immaculate. Lovely
displays, all lace, lace tools and lace books.

Looking at the lace Chinese phoenix reminded me I could share information
about Chinese rank badges that were attached to Chinese robes - some of you
may own one or two. These 12-inch square badges were earned through many
years of study, often starting at age 3, and clearly indicated how far a
man had advanced in rank. Their wives wore a companion one. They were worn
in the period from 1391 to 1911. Whether birds (civil rank), or animals
(military rank) - when the head faces left (as you are facing it) it is for
the man, when right, it is for the wife. When you see portraits of couples
together, the birds will be facing. I have 35 books about Chinese
embroidery. The best on this subject is "Ladder to the Clouds - Intrigue and
Tradition in Chinese Rank" by Beverly Jackson and David Hugus, Ten Speed
Press,
California, 1999.

After reading Yvonne's website, I decided to check availability of her new
book in Dutch/English/German. Both Van Sciver (U.S.) and Barbara-Fay.de
(Germany) are offering it. Fay's site says ***unfortunately without
prickings***.

Does someone on Arachne have this new book? The absence of prickings may
be a concern, so it would be nice to have a confirmation of this fact - for
potential buyers. Perhaps the text explains this omission.
