I recall some of those same things, and how we were affected by the shortage of nylons. Department Stores would send out cards to "special customers" occasionally, which entitled the recipient to buy one pair of nylons from a rare shipment. Since nylons were supposedly part of our school uniforms, we had to have them, and mended the inevitable runs in those stockings and wore them! Also in desperation we wore thick cotton long hose... the nuns would not allow the leg makeup for school...
