Susan I have always thought that a student can start in any one of 3 places: torchon, tape lace, or Beds/Cluny. And it doesn't matter which one comes first. I also think that every beginner should plan on doing a little of all those 3 within the first 2 years. That collection of laces gives most of the techniques used. For someone interested in Bruges, a few tape lace patterns would be a perfect place to start. She will learn edges, turning stitch, sewings, braids/plaits.
