I think the way they explained it (we were members when it first came
in) was that they can only claim gift aid on a donation. If everyone has
to pay the £9 of the entry fee, then to be able to claim the tax refund
you have to give a donation on top of the fee.
Even so, on top of travel expenses, the £17 per person admission fee is
what puts me off going to see the exhibition, especially as I would not
be able to get there on my own, and the report that you need binoculars
to see the some of the lace is not very encouraging. We have visited the
house in the past, it is a treasure trove of items, including textiles,
and well worth visiting, but even then (it is now a number of years
since we went) the NT Handbook warned that pre-booking was recommended,
especially in school holidays or at weekends they tended to be very busy
and there was no guarantee of being able to get a timed ticket for that
day when you got there if you hadn't pre-booked.

It is not logical to me that they charge more when they are also able
to claim an extra £2.50 and some charities charge less for Gift Aid
entry fees. I have been told this is standard National Trust pricing
policy, not just at Waddesdon.
