Dear Lace Makers, If you are traveling this Autumn/Winter/early Summer to the East Coast of the U.S. or live nearby, you might like to schedule a visit to Winterthur (State of Delaware) to see the exhibit: The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament http://www.winterthur.org/diligentneedle Yes, this is about embroidery. But, I have spoken with a representative at Winterthur and confirmed that the Jane Little needle lace sampler is in the exhibit! There might be lace on other items. You will remember that I always say that lace and embroidery have traveled together through history, sharing the same clothing, household furnishings, and ecclesiastical works of thread art. The Costumes of Downton Abbey will still be on exhibit until Jan. 4, 2015. Our Devon Thein has written extensively about this exhibit in the Summer 2014 IOLI Bulletin (a 6 1/2 page cover article). It is always advisable to call Winterthur to make reservations. 800 + 448-3883 Next month: It is quite late to register for the conference being held next month. But, a room mate and I did so this week! It will be held on Oct. 24-25, 2014, and you can read about it at http://www.winterthur.org/diligentneedle Click on conferences page (blue ink) at the bottom of the page for details about speakers and topics. Everyone will attend the morning lectures. We are scheduled to see the Downton Abbey exhibit on Friday afternoon, but would prefer other afternoon programs so we are on the waiting lists for those. Please let me know if you will be attending so we can arrange to meet each other. Time spent at Winterthur is always intellectually and creatively rewarding. You learn a lot, and are in the company of magical participants. I do not think there are any other American educational opportunities quite like those offered at Winterthur, in the U.S. You will always remember your first visit to Winterthur. Non-members must pay more, but if you add to the extra fee an additional $10, you can be a member for a year. I apologize for being so late in telling you about this unique educational opportunity.
