With regard to size - I wonder what would have been used in medieval times.

Were hankies used? I would have thought the cover cloth for a basket would probably be appropriate to the use of the time, but was there bobbin lace? I think probably a punto en aria style which would be fairly quick to do - a long length and gathered at the corners then you could do it on your bolster pillow without having to move it. It could also be quite narrow.

Just off the top of my head

Malvary in Ottawa where it felt quite a bit milder today at -7c with a wind chill of only -16c (except when I was filling the car with gas and then it still felt ****** cold)
