My local sewing store has three different 100% cotton sewing threads from Mettler, so watch out which one you get. There is a quilting cotton, their “silk finish” sewing cotton, and a fine machine embroidery thread. All of these come in a range of colours. The fine machine embroidery thread is a 2-ply and from the other comments I’d expect it to be the most similar to the one you are replacing.
