You could, very easily. 

I’ve thought of it and never done it, for two reasons. First, If I’m going to 
the trouble of making the tape, why would I make a length of tape and then cut 
it up and sew it onto the pattern to resemble tape lace, when I could so easily 
have just made real tape lace directly on the pattern. Second, Battenberg eats 
up a lot of tape, and I find making simple tape mind-numbingly boring. So I’d 
probably never complete the tape project, let alone using it to make Battenberg.

So that’s why I’d prefer to buy machine-made.
