Leonard, a now sadly gone old lacemaker who learned the craft in Northern England many, many years ago, was taught to just draw out the pattern with lines, and then put up the pins "where necessary" as she worked! I saw her patterns and also her work, - and it was just as good as those of us who place pins in dots!!!
Certainly move the pin holes if necessary to get the lace more even, and more to your own liking. I am a bit of a rebel in this - I use the pattern and dots as Guide lines, and if I feel a pin hole needs to be moved a fraction - then I move it!! Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz.
