Hello All! After a jam-packed week of lace, I need a vacation! Who knew there could be so many lace related events with so many lacy party animals? Allie's bolster class was a revelation & working palms up was easier than I expected. Mr. Marguccio's bobbins & stand worked well, although I found I need to add some weight to the bolster pillow I made. I will make that correction before taking another workshop. Jane Atkinson's class gave me a whole new take on Torchon. Not sure that it will ever be my favorite but I now have rudimentary skills to draft a pattern & norm the pinholes to suit the desired result, a widened vocabulary of grounds (beyond Dieppe, Torchon, honeycomb, rose ground etc) & a method to measure the Tex of threads & test them on a grid. It was a lot to digest in five days! The lace challenge items were superb, although names & individual pieces are mostly a blur now. Janice Blair's sunflower was among the stunning winners & I hope photos will appear! in the Bulletin so everyone can enjoy them. Getting home from Iowa proved to be time consuming as weather conditions & mechanical issues took their toll on the flight schedule at United. I was stuck in Chicago after missing my connection to Erie. Note to all: TSA in Chicago is ready for anything! My rhinestone studded tank top set off the body scan detector so I was given the "blue glove pat down" by a charming TSA maiden. Then the bobbin winder in my carry on bag caused further scrutiny by more blue gloved inspectors: a chemical test for my hands & bag in addition to examining the contents. Note to self--wear only the most innocuous clothing & pack all curiosities in checked luggage. Nevertheless, it did give me the chance to explain how to make bobbin lace by hand to the assembled TSA crowd! Humorous now, but not so funny at 6:30am with four hours sleep!! Hope everyone else had a great time too. Perhaps now is a good time to mention the IOLI scholarship progr! am that covers 24 hours of instruction. Take time now to plan for Ind ianapolis! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA
