I read your emails."I use continental bobbins, so a lot of my bobbins, usually Binche, are plain, although I am acquiring dark wooden ones. I love Chris Parsons painted bobbins, usually a present at Christmas or my birthday from DH, so all of them are special. Since he gives me the ones I ask for, (smart guy) and I ask for ones significant in my life, like the months of our five birthdays, or Jane Austen, or my beloved Twelve Days of Christmas, they all are significant to me, and I use them year round. As someone who does a fair amount of Flanders and Binche, seasonal bobbins are out of the question. I do them all. I also try to buy commemorative bobbins, like the Royal Wedding, the Queen's Jubilee, WWI, WWII, all sorts of bobbins that have meaning to me. So I see old favorites, or remember particular lace days, always a warm feeling, like photos of my family.
I like to come down in the morning before anyone else but the dog is awake, make the tea and coffee, and, at this time of year especially, make lace in the dark, with my lamp, and watch the sun rise outside the sliding glass door, drinking a really big mug of coffee. The mental stimulation and the caffeine really get me started, and I feel as if I have accomplished something before the day has begun. It's not quite meditation, but it is a quiet time to gather forces for the day. Sometimes I also sit down to lace in the afternoon with a pot of tea as well. In the evening, when I am too tired to make lace, I knit. Nowadays one can really only make lace when other parts of life are not pressing, which means we have, or have carved out, at least a half hour of time that is our own. Not the family's, not work, not urgent tasks. This has got to be good for the soul, whatever we call it.
