I have had a ball point needle and thread, and worked knotted lace on my last 2 trips to USA (Virgin airlines). They got though the scans Ok. On another flight (from Norfolk Island, I think) they removed the nail file I accidentally left in my handbag, - but left me a bunch of Safety pins! I have used a safety pin in place of a crochet hook, for some tatting - works OK at a pinch!
