You must hang your pairs at the point indicated by the forward-pointing arrow. Once you have worked around the star shape, you will then move in to work the centre. Depending on how many pairs you have chosen to work the star shape with, you may need to tie off and cut one or two pairs to continue with a plait. Hope you can understand my explanation.
