No lace news this morning, so a good time to share my impression of The Lace Guild's 2018 Lace Calendar.  A copy of this review is going to them - so they can anticipate increased interest.  The Guild does not openly promote this funding activity.  Though a bit expensive (with international postage), each year when I renew membership via a phone call to England, several calendars are ordered for special friends.  We all have plentiful lace "toys" and it is fun to display the lace calendar.  The theme for the coming year is *A Modern Twist...*, and features lace designed and made by members of The Lace Guild, inspired by a selection of old laces in the Museum collection.  Each participant chose an item and worked a completely new contemporary design.   Fashions that *move*, like capes and flowing sleeves, are fun to wear.  In flipping through the 12 lace offerings, there is an impression of motion in the selection of edgings and motifs made into jewelry, butterflies and paisley swirls.  These are worked in bobbin and needle laces, crochet, and needlerun (think of Limerick lace),  The May crochet design *A Pocketful of Posies* of dangling colorful 5-petaled flowers can be made by a beginner who might just add these to the hem of an existing scarf or garment.  The total design is for a crocheted scarf of many colors with the flowers attached at the ends.     You will marvel that the scarf designer, Liz Walker, got this inspired idea from a traditional white crochet design of a basket full of posies.  Her scarf is pictured in full on the calendar's back cover, on a dressmaker's mannequin.  A young girl would love it as a gift.  She could probably be taught to make the dangling flowers.  How about making it for a woman who needs a touch of color and whimsy in her life?  The dangling flowers might present danger attached to clothing for a baby, but what fun to make them into a mobile that floats from the ceiling above a crib...and so on.  *A Pocketful of Posies* instructions are available upon request as a pdf from The Lace Guild.  All the other patterns are printed in the calendar.  Support our Guilds.  To order:  Select Sales, then Calendar, from the menu at www.laceguild.org  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center
