Hello All! Yesterday, I received my first Christmas card, lace ornament,
bookmark & a lace tool—all from Lin Hudren. A sparkling RPL candle ornament &
a crocheted holly sprig bookmark decorated the front of her handmade card.
What a way to start the season—Thank You Lin!

At long last, my piece is finished & in the mail. Thank you Lin for not
tapping your toe while I was gnashing my teeth over your ornament! November
just about did me in. My original plan to make a wire lace star didn’t work
out. My fallback project was an Idrija star in two colors. The first was a
total bomb & the second was only slightly improved. What to do? Thankfully, a
dear friend let me borrow her Lace 168 magazine & I found the Holly! OMG—who
is Sharon Scothern? I don’t recall her name from previous publications,
Arachne etc. Her Holly is absolutely adorable & you all know this is high
praise given my aversion to Torchon! 🎶🎵 (I don’t know if emojis work on
Arachne but these are musical notes). 🎶🎵 One of my favorite Christmas carols
is The Holly & the Ivy so I decided to attempt a leaf. Her instructions were
very clear & I was able to make one without difficulty. Please—whoever sees
her first, give her a hug for me! The pattern call!
ed for Gutermann Sulky cotton 30 & of course I don’t own that thread. I
substituted DMC Special Dentelles 80, color 701 & added vintage “nailhead”
beads for berries. To support the beads, I sewed thru a tiny piece of green
felt on the back side. Hope this inspires others to keep trying to make lace
even when things aren’t going smoothly! Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA
