I was taught in typing class many years ago to put two spaces after periods and other punctuation as well. I only learned of the new trend of one space in the last few years when I began to attend groups for writers. It took some retraining, but now I prefer the one space as it's one less tap of a key. Lazy me. Haha
I agree a person should just do what they are used to when it comes to emails and social media. It's only when one plans to publish that this might become an issue. It's not like there are space police out there hanging around with the lace police to come down on offenders.
