I also demonstrate (quite a few every year), usually at historic venues where 
there are many children out with their parents, class groups with teachers,  
scout groups, etc. I typically get about the same amount of girls as boys. If 
the children "get it" right away, I always ask if they're good at math because 
I've always seen a correlation. Nearly all of them look up and excitedly nod 
that they are. 

This has been a great thread to watch. I was a chemical engineer (until I 
stayed home with my 5 children for 14 years when they were young) and love 
math.
