I started learning to make lace in 1969 after I saw it being demonstrated at a
craft show and as many other learners did, started with torchon before moving
on to other types of lace making, including needle lace. In those days all I
wanted was to try to learn more difficult and intricate types of lacemaking.

Now, aged 78 and with poor eyesight and arthritis in my fingers I can still
make (and see) the thicker threads and repetitive patterns of torchon whereas I
cannot manage the finer types of laces and threads and so it means that I can
still make lace.
