Dear Brian,
Christine and David Springett in their book Spangles and Superstitions (Rugby:
C&D Springett, 1987, p.6) write about dating spangled bobbins. They wrote "the
earliest dated bobbin of this style that we know of is from the first decade
of the 19th century, but the precise dating of plainer spangled bobbins is
very difficult."

In the Springett's later book on bobbins (Success to the Lace Pillow, Rugby:
C&D Springett, 1997), they show pictures of spangled bobbins made by "The
Bitted Man" between 1810-1820. The name of "The Bitted Man" is unknown, but
his bobbins are spangled (p. 21-22).

Good luck with your research.

Jo Ann
