Dear Brian,
I still have not finished reading the Rough Lot article, it is rather long.
I did finish the Take the Children article.  This is tough reading.  Lace is
beautiful, but it should not be the reason for stunting the bodies and minds
of children for lace, whether hand or machine made.  Exploitation, pure and
simple, of the poor, of course, but parents were complicit in it, although
what other choice did they have once machine lace came in and dropped prices
everywhere.  I wonder what these girls lives were like once they grew up.
With the long working hours, they had little chance to learn life skills, or
reading, writing, arithmetic.  No training in cooking, cleaning, child
rearing, all skills learned at home, watching their mother and going to
school.  But they were working instead.  And the TB and other diseases they
got from the terrible working conditions.  To say nothing of stunted growth
due to malnutrition.  Thousands of girls in this situation.  For the parents
sending them into this life, it was a choice between starvation and this.

a day.  So we leave tomorrow.

Whilst not the report I was looking for, I have found a PDF "Take the
