I guess I always assumed (bad idea!) that it was bobbin lace since Vermeer's
famous lacemaker is working on a bobbin lace pillow in the painting. I sort of
remember in the book that they referenced/speculated that it was the oldest
daughter who posed for that painting. Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of my
all-time favorite books. Chevalier writes an incredible amount of tension into
that one.

Also - in Chevalier's book "Girl with a Pearl Earring" there is a mention of
the girls working on their lace in front of their home. I've always
wondered if it was bobbin lace or needle lace - seems it would be easier for
young girls to manage needle lace outdoors, but I believe bobbin lace would
have been more common in the Netherlands at that time. Any thoughts?
