It might be a monkey, but it also might be one of the "monkey-like" small dogs like a Brussels Griffon or a Lowchen--aristocratic nuns were notorious for keeping their lapdogs with them in the convents, and I do think a little dog like that would be a safer companion for people making lace and embroidery than an inquisitive monkey. This one seems to be sitting on a small, dark pillow on top of one of the stools, and looks resigned to staying there. (The other little critter doesn't even get the small pillow!) Somehow I don't see an unrestrained monkey doing that, with so many interesting playthings around? I agree it's an interesting illustration, whatever the animal is!
