I missed the earlier reports from attendees of this event as I only
resubscribed to Arachne yesterday, but I do want to add my praise to
that of Alice Howell about this wonderful week of lace. The
facilities were top-notch, the food (both the catered events that
were part of the registration and the campus dining room) were
fantastic and varied, and the campus at Sweet Briar is simply lovely!
My roommate and I fell into the habit of rising early each morning to
take a walk on the extensive trails around the campus before
breakfast, and I will long treasure the sights and sounds we
experienced on those walks through the woods and among the meadows --
the doe nursing her twin fawns, the beaver swimming in the lake, the
Eastern bluebird perched on the fence, the sound of the pileated
woodpecker on a dead tree in the early morning light, the numerous
butterflies flitting about the beautifully landscaped and well-tended
gardens. Heavenly!!
The lace workshops were wonderful as well, and again the facilities
for holding them could not have been better! And it was such a
pleasant experience to be able to leave our lace pillows and drafting
tools in the classroom and return after dinner to work some more each
evening in the company of other students rather than having to haul
them back and forth to our rooms each day. And being able to take 4.5
days of workshop really gave me the time to work out my lace
reconstruction pattern, to the point where I am almost ready to make
a pricking of it and see how it works up on the pillow -- hooray!
Clay is to be congratulated for hosting such a great event, one that
will rank high on my list of must-attend lace events in the future! I
have already entered the dates for next year on my calendar, and
can't wait to return to Sweet Briar for another wonderful lace
retreat.
