I too learnt (more by copying) to measure/estimate a yard from nose to fingertip from Mum. That's kind of hard to do when your not fully grown and when you're in a metric system (since a meter is longer than a yard by 3"), but now I'm back in an 'imperial' world, I use nose to finger tip for guestimating how much ribbon yardage or fabric I might need when I'm in the store.
