If only they'd had this exhibition a few years ago - Soudley is just
down the road from where my Dad used to live in Coleford. I'm very
unlikely to visit the area again now he's gone.

If you are in the West Country (of England that is) and have some
spare time it could be well worth going to visit Sudeley Castle. They
have a fantastic collection of lace and other textiles, most of which
have never been shown before. They are just becoming aware of what
they have and want to utilise it properly. This year what they have
on show is really only the tip of the iceberg, but if they get the
support of lacemakers then hopefully the rest will be made available.
Much of it needs to be properly conserved, and we all know how much
time & money that takes, and as it is a private collection it would
be only too easy for them to pack it all up and put it back in the
attic. Just to give you an idea among other things there is a
complete set of Jacobean needlelace hangings for a 4 poster bed, and
a beautiful long strip of antique Milanese, that was in the childrens
dressing up box!
In the Lace Society we are encouraging them in what they aim to do,
and by way of support we will be demonstrating lacemaking for a
fortnight. I'm doing three days there -which I 'm really looking
forward to as I have always enjoyed demonstrating, especially when
there is a try-pillow which there will be.
So please visit if you can, and certainly look at their website,
www.sudeleycastle.co.uk/events and keep them in mind for the future
visits- there is the potential for another "Fine & Fashionable" if
they think it will attract lacemakers and other needleworkers - they
just need convincing that lacemakers will come.
