Dear Dee

As far as I can make out, the traditional Beds way of
doing picots is do anything you find easy that looks
right, so if you can do them to your own satisfaction
in any other lace, do them that way in Beds! I do
two-thread picots in Bucks beds and Honiton, and all
the same way, just adjusting the number of twists
before hhe pin. I have been told by Pat Perryman for
Honiton the late Mrs Carter for Bucks that I am not
using the correct method, but don't change as you'll
make a mess, and don't tell anyone to use your method
unless all others fail for them!

That said, with single picots holes can appear against
plaits, and the best solution is to try all
permutations of ending before the picot with a cross
or twist, and starting after with a cross or twist,
and see which works for you. If you are doing picots
either side of a plait, it can be virtually impossible
to keep them level without a hole; one solution is to
accept that they won't be level, and do a half stitch
between them, which can be neater than you might think
provided you consistently do the left (or right) one
first.
