Just a short sidelight on this fascinating thread - re the edict of 1634 and
most sumptuary legislation; if someone's banning it, several people are
wearing/doing it! But it is nice to see that human nature reasserted itself
over high-minded principles when the English crossed the Atlantic - social
status mattered, and if you were grand enough, you could wear frivolities
denied the lower orders.
