Hi All,
I am very late to respond this topic as I read lace-digest. I am sorry.
You are talking about the number of Japanese lacemakers. I must respond !
We don't have any organization for lacemakers, e.g. OIDFA, The Lace Guild
etc.
in Japan, so I don't know how many lacemakers in Japan but I've heard there
are about 200 Japanese members of OIDFA.
There are quite a few of the Lace Guild in England, I presume.
I make bobbin lace. I only know about bobbin lacemaker in Japan but there
are so many
tatting lacemakers, needle lacemakers, crochet lacemakers etc. in Japan.
If I include "KUMIHIMO", traditional Japanese braid, there are many
"KUMIHIMO"
makers.

As for the Japanese, there must be quite a lot because in every OIDFA
congress I have attended, they showed up in a big group. Question is how
good is their English in order to correspond with us. The ones I have met
had very poor English.
Hi Miriam,
I've never attended OIDFA congress.
I know a travel agent organize a tour to OIDFA congress every 2 years.
The minimum number is 20 people. It is big group.
Some bobbin lace teachers attended with their students. It may be big group.
Yes, you are right. English is big problem for us Japanese.
In 2010, OIDFA congress is going to be held in Japan.
You will see much bigger Japanese groups.
