An interesting developement from Nottingham: at least it shows someone is
taking lace, and lace design, seriously. I believe the NTU collection includes
handmade as well as machine lace, though of course that's where the emphasis
will be.

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY AHRC DOCTORAL RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP - UNDERSTANDING
THE HERITAGE OF NOTTINGHAM LACE TO INFORM CONTEMPORARY FASHION

Nottingham Trent University and Hand & Lock Embroidery invite applications for
an AHRC-funded studentship to start on 1 October 2008.

Nottingham Trent University are working with Hand & Lock Embroidery to find
ways of using NTU’s collection of 75,000 samples of Nottingham lace as a
resource to support creative innovation in contemporary design. Hand & Lock’s
expertise in the design and production of hand made lace and appliqué work for
international fashion, along with fashion and textile researchers at NTU will
together support a student to work with items in the lace collection drawing
from the practice of textile design and production. You will have a Masters
in textiles, fashion, applied arts, or another design field and will develop
the precise details of the research process with supervisors, to suit your
abilities and interests. The research process is likely to include analysing
the evolution of visual and structural forms in lace, using the lace
collection, with support from the Natural History Museum. You will work for a
period of time at Hand & Lock’s London premises, applying the insights ga
ined from analysing the collection. Practical outcomes from this aspect of
the work could form part of the final submission. The Studentship award
includes a maintenance grant of £12,940, will cover UK/EU fees and additional
funds for research expenses.

The award is open to candidates who satisfy the criteria for eligibility for
