Morning Spiders
I was given to believe that Torchon Lace was 'Beggars Lace', due to
the fact that torchon was the only lace the 'more normal' (rather than
the 'elite') could afford! Nowhere have I seen that it was an easy
lace to master, but it's one of the few laces to be worked to a 'grid'
isn't it?
I learned (and still am, at times) Torchon, mainly because I was
taught to 'read' the lace - take the pattern from a photograph and re-
draw it onto graph paper, then make the pricking. It helps you to
realise just where the threads are going from each pin hole!
I love the look of things like Honiton Lace (back of this time's Lace
Mag for instance) and some Bedfordshire laces, and some Bucks Point.
I'm 'having a go' at Beds at the moment, but with it being finer, it
takes longer, so if I wanted to show something to someone new I'd pick
a torchon pattern! I would've said it's a lace for the people who
like structure, enjoy firm shapes, and it's certainly a lace to be
reckoned with when it comes to teaching others! (Not that I'm ever
likely to do that...)
